Every year there is excitement around the Youth Class and this year was no different. Lots of movement in and out of the class meant nobody could be sure of who would come out on top. The track prep went well and the entries where in. Its time to go racing.
The early speed was with Fred Tarrant as he threw down a lap time that nobody could match. It seems right that Fred would be front of the pack, but could he stay consistent enough to win the day. Next up in second place was the first of the McGuffog brothers with Harley setting a solid time to beat Jack barker into third. Next in grabbing fourth place was Jude Scotney who certainly seems to have grown in confidence in the winter which is great to see. Newcomer Ella Hales crossed the line in fifth spot keeping the Hales name strong in the Youth Class no doubt with some advice and support from Champion brother George. Sophie Bird stepped up to sixth with Lenny McGuffog just one second behind in seventh. Newcomers Olly Hedges and Blake Crowthers closed off the back of the grid but no doubt they won’t be staying there for long as their experience grows.
Race one answered all the questions as all the drivers showed their true potential. Fred Tarrant led early on and looked set for the race win until mechanical issues seen him loose pace. Jack Barker stepped up and took full advantage taking the race win is some style. Fred settled for second in what was a great race for the pair. Jude Scotney proved again that he had been eating his Weetabix over winter with a solid third spot making him a contender this year for sure. Next home was Lenny McGuffog just off the pace of the front three but certainly with more give. Sophie Bird moved up the field into fifth place with newcomer Olly Hedges crossing the line sixth. Ella Hales slipped back slightly into seventh as Blake Crowther closed of the back of the field.
Race two seen more of the same from Jack Barker as he broke from the front and never looked back. Another race win from Jack setting up the clean sweep for race three. Jude Scotney took complete advantage of Fred Tarrant absence landing second spot with his fastest lap equal to the leaders proving he can compete at the front. Third place belonged to Lenny McGuffog with another solid performance. Ella Hales stepped up and moved through the field into fourth showing that there is speed there that will come out as the season progresses. It’s easy to forget it’s her first year so well-done Ella. Olly Hedges listened to advice about consistency and scoring points in every race taking fifth spot and another chunk of points towards the overall. Sophie Bird slipped slightly back to sixth with Blake Crowther progressing and picking up more pace every lap closing off the grid. Great race to watch so well done everyone.
The final race was more of the same as Jack Barker bolted off the line and didn’t look back, Three out of three for Jack so well done. Jude Scotney again took second place but remained on the same second as the race leader. These two cars look set to have a good season and its racing we are all looking forward to seeing. Lenny McGuffog closed off the top three with a bit to find top catch the top two but that will come with time for sure. Olly Hedges stepped up to fourth in a great race for the young Welbourn’s driver proving consistency is key. Ella Hales had another solid race, learning every lap. Fifth place a great start to her season. Sophie Bird seemed to struggle in race three with sixth her final place. Sophie gets faster as the year goes on if history is anything to go by. Last across the line was young Blake Crowther finishing off his first day of racing. Well done, Blake.
Another truly fantastic event for the youngsters. Thank you to all the teams who took part and the event staff and volunteers that make it all possible. Really can’t wait till the next youth round when some of the cars that missed round one can add to the excitement.
Well Done Everyone
